How do I make the grass in our partly shaded back yard thicker?

The grass is very thin in places, like a balding man. We have put more seed in the spring, but it doesn't seem to want to take.

You will need to pierce the soil. It is called aerating.
Did you plant grass seed specifically designed for shady areas?
Yes we did. We then went to shady and sunny grass seed. We have had a full week and a half of rainy weather and the ground is not luscious .
I found Scotts Weed n Feed sure lushed up and thickened by shady puny lawn on the North side.
Maybe water with miracle grow for grass!!?
Now grass as short as possible and rake. Spread seed and topsoil if you have a spreader, or throw seed, then dirt...rake again to work it down into the grass. Keep it watered.
Check soil pH. Most likely you need to top spread lime in that area.

I wonder if this area won't require deep digging and soil amendments. Too much rain will ruin most grasses, without good ground drainage. Does the area also need limed? Perhaps a good soil test/analysis will better answer your question.
