How do I re-surface a heavily plastered wall?
the living room & hallway walls are textured with a heavy southwest pattern. I would like to update the texturing to something smooth. I did one small wall by going over it with more mud, but that was a real bear! Is replacing all the Sheetrock my only option??

Your easiest solution might be to either put up drywall or possibly hop on the shiplap bandwagon (or some other wood wall solution). You could also get a contractor to come in and quote you on repairing/replacing the textured walls.
Love your ceilings! I think the busyness is an individual judgment. Why not see if we can find where someone has both and you can judge for yourself. I’ll see what I can find.
You could put 1/4 inch sheetrock on top of it.
I considered that, but wondered if it would be s problem with molding around windows & doors. There’s a big picture window on one wall, & a couple of doors to work around.
