What is the best way to build a porch onto an existing set of steps?

I have an existing set of steps with a very small landing and I want to build a wooden deck type porch using the existing landing- what is the best way to start ?

I really don't like painted steps and my husband caulked the porch where there were cracks and I don't like the looks of it at all. Any suggestions?

Check with your local municipality. You will need a building permit. There may be local restrictions on such things.
