How to give my kichen cabinets a new look?
I have old, laminate cabinets that need replacing but that's not in the budget. What is the best way to paint laminate cabinets so they will both, look good and have a lasting finish?

Dana, Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for your kitchen. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.
Proper prep work is the key to any successful paint job; there are specific cleaners/deglossers for laminate, there are several videos on YouTube about cleaning -- removing the doors and hardware will make the job much easier, https://www.bobvila.com/articles/painting-laminate-cabinets/ has good info.

First you'll want to remove the doors and hardware. Clean the doors well with TSP. You don't want to sand the laminate, unless it's in really bad shape, it'll fall apart quicker if the pressed board is revealed. Spray with primer that will stick to laminate. Then choose a high or semi gloss paint. Try a paint sprayer from Amazon to apply (they have their own brand that's inexpensive but effective.)
Find a place protected from wind and bugs, maybe created with a couple tarps. Set the doors face down and paint the inside. Let them dry and then flip for the front side. Remember to fully prime the doors so the paint sticks.
You can also spray on a clear coat at the end for durability.
You'll need to paint the cabinets themselves by hand, use a low density foam roller where you can.
Just remember to have patience, a relatively inexpensive kitchen upgrade, that looks good, isn't fast.
Sand them down and use sticky back plastic which can be purchased in many styles/colours/effects to suit your decor then look around for replacement modern handles or door knobs at DIY stores also Wilkinson or online.
I simply primed and painted the cabinets. They look terrific. (For doing a job without the priming, use Annie Sloan paint.) Take doors off of hinges for a more professional look.
