Hi Dorothy,
It seems you have gotten good info on how to do this, so I will just add a hint here...
Since you will need just a little black paint for the face, you can use
fingernail polish!
It is waterproof and is available for Halloween already at the dollar store (I got mine at Dollar Tree). I needed it for eyes for the Snowman I am making for the Christmas decoration for my mailbox.
I drew on my eye circles with a pencil and then used a small stiff craft brush to paint my wood. The brush cleans up with nail polish remover. Just wet a paper towel with remover and rub down the bristles with it.

First you need to cut the wood to the same size, depending on how large you want to make the pumpkin. Attach the boards with 2 horizontal boards screwed to the back creating a pallet board. Then using a jigsaw, cut out a pumpkin shape from the pallet board you created. Sand the edges of your pumpkin, give it a coat of orange paint and you've got yourself a pumpkin! Have fun!
