Is it necessary to have a 3inch tile next to shower pan curb?
I understand that bullnose is used to make the tile edge look finished and to protect it from chipping, but is there another purpose to have a 3 inch tile next to the shower pan curb and up the wall?

This is my pink bathroom. The apartment is a rental, so I can't retile. What can I do to hide it or change its color?
No, you don't need bullnose. Wall tile comes down on top of the shower pan, not bullnose. For the side and top of the tile, you could use Schluter. This goes along the edge so that you don't see the edge of the tile or need a bullnose. I've used it on a fireplace and in a bathroom.

We used the Schluter for the walls. You can get this at most tile stores and some big box stores have something like it, but I'm not sure who manufactured it though. It comes in different profiles, materials and colors. We used the brushed nickel on both projects. It's pretty inexpensive and most tile stores don't tell you about it because they want you to buy the much more expensive bullnose tiles.

No, it's not necessary. I have tiled several tubs and did not use the bull nose tile at all.
Ok! I didn't know if it was to protect the wall at the bottom from water damage. We do have the schluter edging. We just have not done the edges near the pan with any tile yet.
