Maybe you could change out the hardware for a new look, or even a pop of color?
Usually when distressing you have 2 layers of chalk based paint. The darker color goes on first, paint over that with the topcoat color. Distress lightly with sand paper. You can always sand off more but you will need to repaint if you sand off too much. Be sure to seal to protect you new finish. Definitely change the hardware.
if you have detailed cabinets you may want to glaze them to add an aged look.
Thanks Beth. That sounds exactly like what I want.
