As a painter, we used linseed oil to thin our oil paints on our pallet.
Linseed oil will work if the oil paints haven't dried out completely. Unfortunately there isn't any way to reconstitute dry oil paint. Water based paints, yes, oils, no. Once the oil paint is dry it can't be reversed. It is a chemical change (oxidation) of the linseed oil that the paint was made with. Once it's dry, it's dry forever -- one of the reasons oil paintings last so long.
