I love the nice family traditions, rather than anything stuffy for a magazine. It was simply beautiful, and its exactly how I would decorate. I just love it.

If you don't have any decorations yet, start small. One thing I love to do is shop sales AFTER Christmas and save them for the following year. You can save a lot of money this way. But my favorite way to decorate is DIY! Here's some Christmas decorations I've made:

    I go overboard...there...I said it.

One thing I don't do is glitter because I'm still cleaning it out of the floor cracks in June.

To save storage space, I keep and collect Christmas gift bags and boxes. During the season I unfold them, stuff a little colored wrapping paper inside, and tuck them around the legs of (and under) my buffet and china cabinet. They fill 20 feet of linear floor area when on display but after the season I fold them up and stack them into one smallish storage tub. I also collect Christmas tins in various sizes and nest them inside each other when they are in storage.

That's the limit of my space savings cause I have sooo much fun decorating.

I have greenery type garland everywhere..on tables, under tables, swagged over windows, under beams, draped from stair railings. I like to build my garland. I start with the inexpensive fake pine stuff and layer in snippets of all kinds of faux greenery like fern and boxwood, small grape clusters and leaves, berry sprays, freeze dried cedar and eucalyptus. Some years I add trendy ribbon bows. Usually I keep the color to just the faux fruit and berries. I buy everything at deep discount or "damaged goods" prices because I usually cut it into smaller bits and pieces.

I don't look at something and think "that's not ChrIstmas" I'm looking at texture and color. Any time of year, I'll set aside found objects and trinkets if I think they can be woven into or added on to something.

I force myself to have only two trees ( liar, I have a third...a small one near the front door)

I have tons of ornaments that I rotate through. My most precious are the ones made by friends and family. (Thirty five years ago a friend made and painted a Macdonald's cheese burger from salt and flour dough and food coloring. She is an artist so it is amazing. It is very fragile now but I love the memories associated with it) My second most favorite ornaments are the ones I came across in the least expected places or really had to hunt down.

When I was young with no budget, I decorated my tree with candy canes and bite sized, foil wrapped chocolate kisses. I tried popcorn but always ate the construction material. After a party I had to restock the tree.

You can start collecting...what interests you?..nutcrackers?... village houses?...with toy trains?....(hhmm...yes i have all of those and more)

I stay with classic colors and styles because I am a Christmas hoarder and don't want throw out any memories that are out of fashion.
