Enclosed side porch. I do have a black wrought iron/glass top table and 4 chairs on one end of the porch. I also have a white wicker loveseat and white wicker rocker out there, but that is it. I have 2 lights in ceiling waiting for a ceiling fan on the end where the ceiling is vaulted and a flush mounted light for over the table on the other end of the porch. No purchases have been made b/c I can’t decide on color.
I need Decorating help please?
I can’t decorate my newly remodeled unheated sun porch to save myself! No, it’s not your typical do it yourself like I’m building something, but it is a do it yourself for decorating. It seems like a simple task, but in my case it is not. I can’t put colors together no matter what. I’ve ordered indoor/outdoor rugs and wicker cushions like you wouldn’t believe and they all went back to the store. Please help!!

Donna, first, relax! Decorating should be fun, not stress inducing! There are a few basic things to think about:
-60% of the room should be a base/main color
-30% should be a color that complements the main color
-10% should be an accent color (pick one that pops!)
3. Not sure where to start with color? Take one of your favorite
accessories (a pillow or drapes) and select a color scheme
from this. Maybe all three colors - that would be so easy!
4, Arrange your funiture by function. If you play games there,
set up play stations. For conversation, arrange in groups, etc.
Finally, don't do too much right away. Sometimes less is more. You can always add more later. Enjoy your new and beautiful space!
Hi there. What furniture do you have at the moment that you are thinking of using? What color is the furniture?
The color scheme I would go for in this lovely porch would be blue, grey and white - then for a color to add to give life and warmth, I would go for yellow or orange. ???
Fiddledd has got it right. And I agree with you, choosing colors can be daunting. SO, I would suggest that you have a think about the purpose of your sun room. Relaxing? Crafting? A home for plants? On, and on. Once you know the room's main purpose, you have a great start. Using your search engine, look at internet images of other rooms that will have the same purpose as yours. Some you will hate, others will appeal to you. Eventually, you'll notice that some colors give you the feeling of what you want in your porch. Next, head to a home store and get some paint chips in the colors that you like. Bring them home and set them about. Settle on two or three that you especially like and use them to choose your color scheme. And, again, you're right. You should feel pleased and happy in your lovely room.
What a great space! I love the bead-board wainscoting. Do you like the wicker and wrought iron sets? If so, create a dining area in the corner by the window and a seating area against the back wall. If you like coastal decor, add a sisal or jute area rug and add pillows and artwork with shades of blue, green and grey. Find another comfy chair for the seating area and a reclaimed wood style coffee table. Accessorize with books, shells, candles, mirrors and plants. White linen or cotton tie up blinds will provide privacy in the evening and look stylish while filtering light during the daytime. If you like cottage, choose floral and gingham pillows, add bouquets of fresh flowers and hang plates on the wall. If your style is more eclectic, get a bold statement rug and add poufs for seating, a macrame chandelier and large floor lanterns. Hope this gives you some ideas!
It does look like a very lovely space. Just off the cuff I think you may be confused because what you do have. . . the white wicker furniture and the black iron furniture are really two disparate looks. It isn't the wicker or the iron, it is the black and the white. this of course is not wrong, but where you are insecure about your choices this may be why. You may be happier if you have either the wicker or the iron spray painted. You may be happier if your intermix the pieces, so one material is not all in one place. Actually here is something else to consider. Pretend you have a tight budget, that you can not afford so many choices. Check out yard sales, estate sales, auctions for furnishings. Here is a pic of iron and wicker together, they are united by color (the green) but IMHO the cushions on the iron settee are not a thematic match. I just have to live with that as they are beautifully constructed and the whole set was a real buy. Sometimes we have to accept less than perfect.
Sorry for copying and pasting all the same reply but in addition to my non decorating skills I’m technixally challenged as well. Lol. I wanted to make sure you all saw my last request.
Hi there. I agree with your thought of the black ceiling fan and light over the wrought iron table and chairs. This would definitely pull the room together as Jan Clark said.
Donna, both the white and black light fixtures and ceiling fans would work - it's really just your preference. I would use white if you want them to blend in and black if you want them to stand out. As for you thinking that white is for kitchens and that you like things "matchy matchy", try breaking out of this way of thinking if you can! Decorating is nothing more than making your house comfortable and "your own". Personally, I prefer decor that shows the personalities of the owners and shows their character. After all, a home is where you live, and you should surround yourself with things that not only make you happy but tell a little about the owner and the people who live there.
It might be easier for you to start with some pieces you already have. Place them in the space until you're satisfied that day. After you've lived with it for a while move them around and try something else. Once you actually see how you're going to use the space. Ideas will come on how to finish it out.
It's easier for me and maybe for you to start off a little Spartan add pieces as you go. I have never had great success building showroom space in a day.
Look at some of the colors inside your home, cute porch by the way. On the wicker love seat pull in some yellow pattern pillows, not sure of the cushion on love seat but you can pick 1 or 2 colors from cushion for your pillows. Decorating is fun but for me I don't do matchy matchy too boring for me. Another idea something like a small buffet or sofa table to place some dishes, napkins, etc so you not always running in the house for stuff when eating on the porch. Place a vase of fresh flowers on the center of patio table which again adds color, Perhaps a round basket that you could place some throws so on cool nights you sitting you can have a throw handy. I love the idea of a cute wrought iron light over the patio and with a vase a flowers make it pop. Ceiling fan from the pictures it is not a big porch so you need something 30 inches no more than 40 Hunter Fans at Lowes has come out with some vintage looking ceiling fan. How to measure for ceiling fan measure width and length of the porch and add that number is the size of ceiling fan. I also place a very small table between love seat and rocker that way you have a place to put your cup of tea. Hope this helps
I can see that done up into a beautiful morning coffee drinking spot and book reading spot!! A nice little cafe table, and a comfy oversized chair/love seat type seat, some Roman blinds on the windows, a soft light colored fluffy area rug, maybe some indoor trees in nice pots, some hanging planters with some white or pale colored flowers hanging over the edges of the planters. I can't remember what they're called but the thugs you put on the wall that hold either candles or have lights in them, a sconse maybe?
