I want to put one over my deck for shade and I want to attach it to the garage only. And place two antique ladders on top to decorate with lights. How far could I come out without putting to much pressure on the one wall. Or would it be better to put 4 corners up?

How to add a pergola to an existing deck?
If you add four posts, they will help define the porch better, as well as support your very original pergola. Be sure to use bracket to attach the frame to your garage, not just nails. Using ladders for the cross pieces is genius! I hope you will post your project on Hometalk. Best wishes ☺️
I see that your putting up on the gutter side of the garage. You may want to make this a stand alone pergola. The number of supporting post will be determined by the length of the pergola. You may want to contact your city to determine if it will need to be inspected. A variety of plans for pergola's can be found all over the internet.
In our city you would need a permit to tie it into the garage, but a self supporting structure would not require it.
