Smell really musty. It is nearly winter time here. Pretty wet and cold so I can sit it out side.

I bought an old hope chest, cedar lined and it smells very musty. How can I get rid of that smell?
Try cleaning with Dawn and baking soda, then spray vinegar liberally on the surfaces. After 15 minutes, rinse and dry. Make sure no small holes exist to admit vermin. If you find any, insert steel wool, then plaster over the holes to seal. Place containers of baking soda in the garage, changing it every few days.
If the above fails to work, buy Odo Ban from Sam's Club and rewash all surfaces. If you have a large fan, run it in the garage area to exit outdoors.
I agree with Oliva. You will have to clean the area well. The vinegar will help a lot with the musty odor. If you do have vermin in the garage, set up traps along their paths that they take to get rid of them, if you put out poison, they may die in the walls, or leave the garage and die where pets or kids can get hold of them. The musty smell is from being closed up for periods. My garage gets musty smelling if left closed for a few days because of the high humidity in the summer. We always open the garage for at least a few hours a day, unless it is raining really hard and the air stays much fresher. We also leave open the back window the majority of the time.
I agree with Nancy on leaving your garage open during the day to get in fresh air. The vermin are getting in whether the garage door is open or not. You could spend $ on an exterminator which will locate the exact holes where they are getting in. When those problems are solved, combined with a good cleaning as mentioned in Olivia's answer, I bet you'd see a big difference!
