How to use tree stump?
We have a beautiful tree we unfortunately take down soon. We have a price and person selected, but I am wondering if I could keep the stump and do something with it to amp our curb appeal. Any ideas would be welcome!

Planter on top of stump with trailing plants always look good.
I have a bird feeder mounted on a tree stump in my front yard visible from my living room windows. We spend a lot of time watching the birds. I planted hostas around the base.
First thing...what kind of tree is it and will it sprout suckers below the cut line or worse, shoot up saplings along the root system? If it does, I think you should remove or grind out the stump. (even then you may get baby trees along the roots).
If it's safe to keep..
.....leave a tall stump and carve out something gorgeous.
.....put your address on it when large metal numbers.
.....cut it shorter and set a beautiful planter on it.
.....chain saw the center into a bowl shape and plant directly into it (this will speed up the decay but you should have several years of use before it rots out.
.....ask your sawyer to buck up several level bolts to use as stools or plant stands. If you peel the bark and seal them they'll last a long time.
you have to do is decide how much stump you want left on the tree and ask the person who is taking it down to leave the stump at that height. If you want the stump cut off for use somewhere else, you will have to discuss that with the person cutting down the tree. I am assuming the person cutting it down is taking the wood with him. Good luck with your stump project!
It all depends on how tall the stump will be. If it is tall enough, you could put a bird bath on it and hang feeders from the sides, or you can put a basket of plants on top and use plenty of plants that hang down over the sides. You could even hollow out the top and turn it into a planter on its own. You can plant around the base of the stump and include it in a garden, use attractive mulch and a border to go with the look you want. Some people put fairy gardens at the base if that appeals to you. Think about how you want the stump to blend in with the scheme of things already in your front yard and go from there. Just remember that the shade from the tree won't be there anymore when you choose plantings and what you already planted that was shaded by the canopy of the tree. Have fun in your planning!
