How should I finish this?

I found this beautiful piece of mesquite wood that I'm turning into coffee table. I've already added hairpin legs and am unsure how to finish the top. I've had to treat for termites. Do I fill with wood putty or leave them as natural imperfections? Do I do a special finish (like Unicorn Spit), use plain wood stain, or leave natural and top with clear coat? Suggestions?

What a beautiful piece of wood! Personally I'd leave the imperfections and go for as natural look as possible with just a clear coat. Whatever you decide to do I'm sure it'll look fabulous :)

I would leave the imperfections ... that is what makes it so beautiful. I would take this pic and if u had a scrap of it and go to a wood working store and tell them the wood type and how u have finished the top and get some recommendations from them. I think I clear coat would be awesome on it. But u need to make sure it is smooth before u apply it. Sand it smooth right over all the imperfections so the flat areas will look like glass when done.

  • I have a table like that. Was a hand me down when I was 19. That was 38 years ago. Leave it natural and use a marine varnish on it. Will literally last forever. Let the beauty of the original wood shine through.

Well, they say "what goes around, comes around," and I guess that's true. You got your table 38 years ago, and live edge wood furniture is definitely back in style!

  • Wow, that is super pretty. I would use a natural wax product that will help condition it. I had an old 1850 barn wood door that I turned into a table top and I just used our Best Dang Wax in Clear and left it as is. I am attaching a pix of the table...hope that helps!
