The poles can be notched at the corners to fit together or simply nailed without the notch. You'll need to seal the space between the poles, either with wood slats or cement type seal. You can also flatten two sides of the poles to lie flat against one another. The doors will need frames to nail the poles into, as well as any windows. If you want to use the poles to support a roof, then you will have to notch or nail each support into the poles of the walls, add a top ridge pole, nailed into the roof support poles, then cover with your choice of roofing. I have built an actual, 20x20 rough log cabin that we lived in for five years. It was notched at the corners and sealed with cement held in place with strips of chicken wire attached to each log. The floor of your shed can be of your choosing, or no flooring. It should be fun to build your shed and you will learn a lot.
You will need to make notches where the poles fill together and install some "chinking" to seal the joints between the logs. I would ensure the lowest level is protected from rot. Also I would suggest that you watch "Barnyard Builders" show on DIY/HGTV to see them tear down and build old log buildings. You also need some strong helpers and/or a fork lift.
thank you both...the shed will sit on a concrete pad and the Aspen logs will be peeled. I want to notch the corners but not sure what notch, saddle or square would be easiest. I also have an antique small pot belly stove to place in the shed.
