Hi Marsha,. I would replace the sheetrock. Aloha!
For the crack you could just use joint compound to fill it and allow it to dry before painting over it. If it is a small hole, (like a nail) joint compound should do the trick but if it is larger like a baseball, you will need a patch kit.
They have patch kits for the hole if its not a smooth surface wall take a wet sponge and dap it on wet compound to imatate texter also. Just fill the cracks n do same if needed then paint
