Can I paint over an old popcorn ceiling??

My ceiling is a popcorn ceiling, it's old and cigarette smoke stained. Can I paint over it with white paint. It also has some fine hairline cracks.

Prime with Kilz primer. Then paint with white ceiling paint. Use a thick nap roller.

You might regret painting it if you ever want to remove it. It's easy to remove with water and a scraper. Then you have a smooth ceiling that you can paint. It's almost impossible to remove the popcorn once it's been painted. I removed it in nearly the entire house I bought until I got to the family room. The former owners had painted it. đŸ˜Ÿ

  • you can paint over it, but I suggest you use a thick napped roller to get all the texture covered.

Hi Linda I just had my ceilings done by a professional the 2 that were not painted did come off with a light water spray and were scraped off the one that was painted (that I really wanted removed) was able to be removed but was costly so it was left. He did tell me that you need to be careful when painting popcorn too much moisture will bring the ceiling down because it get loose? I would consult a professional 1st
