Every new mailbox design should be reviewed and receive the Postmaster General’s (PMG) seal of approval before it goes to market. If you opt to construct your own mailbox, it must meet the same standards as manufactured boxes, so show the plans to your local postmaster for approval. There are height and distances from road as well.

There are no standards for mailboxes except for commercial ones. I have a friend who is a motorhead and he made a mail box out of a car engine. The mail carriers love it. I have seen bicycle mailboxes with and without dummies sitting in them . Another buddy used a vintage toy pedal truck and painted it to look like a mail truck.
