When is the best time to fertilize?
We have fall fertilizer. As this is to be applied in the fall when the ground is said to be dormant, does it sit on the soil in a dormant state as well, to go into action in the spring, or does it absorb into the soil in the fall? We have had success in over seeding our lawn and hoped to seed again this fall. When should the fertilizer be spread in relation to the seeding? You also need to know that we have quite a few trees so we have an over abundance of leaves. We therefore wanted to fertilize and or seed prior to the piles of leaves on the lawn. We could have a depth of at least 1 foot of leaves over the entire lawn so wanted to get the fertilizer down before this should happen if that is recommended. We also had a concern that we might disturb the fertilizer/ grass seed by raking and blowing the leaves when it becomes necessary. We had a heavy rain last evening and we understand that the fertilizer shouldn’t be spread on wet grass. We also understand that it should be given a good watering after it is applied. We would appreciate any help you can give us .

The best time to fertilize your lawn is in late Spring when the grass is no longer dormant and in mid-Summer. Your first application is when your grass first greens up in the late Spring. Use a quick release fertilizer to encourage growth. The timing of feeding your lawn in the Summer is very important.
