Chalk paint, yes or no?
I have an old tool chest that was my father in-laws. Great shape and smooth, no damage. I'd like to paint it white and distress it and also put hairpin legs on it. I've never distressed anything. What products should I use and how do I distress it?

Chalk paint is a great option if this is your first project. A few tips I wish somebody had given me before my first project.
Good luck!
I would actually recommend using milk paint for this project. I shared some differences between chalk and milk paints and when to know which one is better to use, if you'd like to give it a read. http://beautyforasheshome.com/chalk-paint-vs-milk-paint-which-is-better/
How fun! You are going to enjoy this project. First I would join our group for inspiration. We have a lot of very knowledgeable and talented people who can hold your hand through the whole process.
There is very little prep as one of the other people answered for you....you did need to make sure your piece is very clean and clear of any dirt or grime or grease. We have an awesome product called White Lightning that works wonders. Then its super easy...We have a couple of different white colors that would be nice. The color Drop Cloth is our number one seller though.
Then when it comes to distressing, super easy...you can do it a number of different ways. You can wet distress, which you would just take a wet cloth and wipe free the areas that you want to distress @15 minutes afterwards....This is with Dixie Belle Paint though, other chalk paints react differently. Or you can dry brush.
We have a lot of tutorials and how tos on our FB page and in our group as well.
The other good thing about Dixie Belle is we have @1300 retail locations across the US. If there is one close to you, many of our retailers have classes or can help walk you through the process as well.
The main thing, don't be afraid, its fun and super easy. We made our paint for beginners!

Oh I wanted to show you a chest that was done with our paint...not sure what yours looks like but thought I would share what one of our retailers shared with me.
I did the same with an old wooden tool chest, problem is that a lot of greasy tools came in contact with the wood over the years. You should give it a coat of bulls eye spray shellac before you paint with the white chalk paint to keep any stains from bleeding through the paint.
