Sealing fabric so colors don’t run?
Is there a product I can use in rag rugs that are being used to make floor cushions to keep the colors in the rugs from running if it gets wet and/or transferring onto floor and clothing? I looked at ScotchGuard products, but some of them got bad reviews.

Half the mustache fell off my 3’ nutcracker. How can I repair it? Nutcracker is made of some type of fibrous material, not plastic, not wood.
When I buy new material I wash with 1 cup of vinegar to rinse cycle and 1/2 cup salt to the wash. You can throw in a color catcher sheet also. Not sure if your rug is a size that you can wash. If not, maybe go to a laundry mat where they have larger commercial machines.
Yup. Soak in vinegar and salt. For a rug you probably want to use a larger solution than Kathy suggested.
Wash later with a color catcher and a crummy old t-shirt to check results.
Hello Glenda,
Wow thats a very worrisome concern. We placed a large wool Persian type rug over wall to wall carpeting in a huge family room and to our horror dye transfer occured. It could not be removed by carpet cleaning professionals - we replaced the entire rooms carpet -when the home went on the market.
With my past experiences —I might suggest getting rid of the rag rugs as the risks are high. I dont believe there is a way to spray protect them unless you make plastic slipcovers for the cushions.
The only thing I can think of ......I wonder if the items can be washed to fully remove the dye and stabilize remaining. I use the SHOUT color catchers. My sister-in-law introduced me to this product. It is a sheet you put in your washer and it collects all possible dye transfer. Ever since starting using this product-im you surprised on how much dye is collected on the disposable sheets with each subsequent wash.
Here’s a few links for you to review.
Consider looking over the Amazon Q&A and customer reviews to see if this might be a product that could be helpful for you to get rid of the dye. Maybe call the Color Catcher 1-800#?
Hope this helps.
