Hi there Kathy, Maybe humidity has caused condensation on the chain and it has turned to rust. WD-40 frees up rusty locks etc. Maybe it can help you with your fan chain!
Another possibility is that the switch has gone bad. This is very common in ceiling fans and their lights. The good news is that replacements are available in home centers and are super cheap. They are also pretty much standard for different manufacturers. They are easy to wire up...just connect black wire on the switch to the black wire on the light etc. Just remember to turn the power to the fan off.
Kathy, You'll have to take the fan down and see where it's stuck, and try to fix it. Aloha!
As long as the switch is good and just dirty, WD 40 makes a dry lube called "Specialist" it is a PTFE or Teflon product and works well for your problem. I would first spray the pull switch where the chain goes into the fan with some automotive carb cleaner to free up the sticking switch, then spray the PTFE right where the chain goes into the fan or light. Oh, and the carb cleaner evaporates very fast so no worry about it gumming up the switch.
