Holly, did you see a recipe here for homemade soap that you're wondering about? Your question appeared in the general question section, so not sure which detergent you're wondering about. But we can help you find it again if you remember some of the ingredients maybe?
Yes. I have horribly hard water and use a free and clear type detergent and add baking soda to each wash and use vinegar instead of fabric softener and felted wool dryer balls instead of chemical filled dryer sheets. Wow, long sentence!
I have hard water at my home and use free and clear detergent. I haven't thought of adding baking soda. Thanks for the tip!
If you are talking about homemade detergent--yes--it will work in hard water. Keep in mind that even if you had soft water the homemade detergent does not soap up like detergent that you buy in a store because it doesn't have all the additives so that it will suds up. It will look like it's not working if you look in the wash machine while your clothes are washing because there is literally no suds--but this homemade detergent works very well and is quite a savings for the amount of time a batch will last.
