I recommend the Modge podge products there a variety to choose from. Many types of finishes. Heres a helpful link.

I use regular Mod Podge in the orange bottle. If it smears on the canvas, it should disappear if you coat it with Mod Podge after it dries. The orange version does get tacky, so I usually cover with hard coat in the purple bottle.
