There are different ways to handle these problems but some of the answer seems to depend on what type of stain you have. A water mark or white stain is handled differently than a dark stain. But this site has some very good info. Hope it helps.

Follow these steps to remove a stain: Sand off the old finish. Mix oxalic acid crystals (sold at home centers and paint and hardware stores) in water, following the package directions. Soak a clean white cloth in the acid mixture. Lift the cloth and check to see whether the stain has been bleached away.Hi Vicky. I'm Cindy. I would like to suggest that you make a paste with olive oil and salt. Let it set on the stain for an hour. Then wipe it up with a clean soft cloth.
