How do I make a ceiling medallion?
We are putting a new light fixture in the kitchen above an island. The old fixture has a big hole in the ceiling, but we don't need that with the new light. It just hangs down with a small cord and down rod. Any creative ideas to cover up the hole? We have pretty rustic/casual decor, so wood could work. Checked ceiling medallions out and and they are more expensive and larger than I would like. Thanks!

Ceiling medallions do come in pretty small sizes. I've seen them well under 10 inches in diameter. Composite ones are very cheap but can look fine once on the ceiling. (I've seen some under $10 at Lowe's for small sizes) They come in plain styles but still might not work with your more casual rustic style. I'm having alot of trouble visualizing your new fixture so I'm not sure what to suggest. Off the top of my head....a small driftwood "wreath" with the cord running through the middle? A small flat wicker "basket tray" with a hole cut in the middle? (Would need to use a good clear glue to keep the cut edges neat.) A simple block of wood (edges nicely softened with plane and sandpaper) that coordinates with the color of your new fixture? A small homemade pinecone wreath?

I can't find it right now but I have seen a project where someone made a square wooden area on the ceiling and put boards up in a chevron pattern. I think they used pallet wood or plywood that was ripped. The boards were stained slightly different shades and was so cool.
