Hi Mary,
I am assuming you have already installed roofing felt (some people would skip this for a shed) and the drip edge for the front. Your first row of shingle is installed with the rain slots facing up towards the peak of the roof. Some might cut the tabs off, but I prefer to leave them on. Now install the drip edge for the gable ends. Your second row is installed with the rain slots facing down on top of your flist row with the bottom edges flush. Stagger the seams. There is a particular pattern to laying out the shingles as you go up. At least 3 if not 4 nails per strip for good wind and rain resistance. There are good tutorials on YouTube that will show you how to do this.
