If you're doing a brand new area, you need to start by taking off the sod and digging down to remove a bit of soil (4-6 inches). You can put landscape fabric down at this point too, to reduce the roots growing up again. Add a layer of fine pea gravel and stone dust and tamp it level, smooth and compacted.
Lay your patio stones in whatever pattern you prefer, edge with a plastic border and put some polymeric sand down to fill the joints. Wet the sand to activate it and let dry to cure. You'll have a patio that will last and be weed free for years
