Ask the paint pros at your home improvement store. They have all of the paints and application tools you need to do it right.
Marla - there are metallic spray paints as well as kits to paint appliances. Look into those - but they will not fool any one into thinking they are stainless steel. There are some peel and stick products as well as some magnetic products made to cover appliances. I would look into those instead of paint.
I'm not sure how to paint it, but I've seen these magnetic stainless steel dishwasher covers that look like they might do the trick: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dappliances&field-keywords=stainless+steel+dishwasher+cover
Use contact-type paper here https://www.ezfauxdecor.com/peel-and-stick-stainless-steel-film/ I have used this before to upgrade the look of my dishwasher (I used the brushed nickel) to match other appliances and it turned out great. I also used the faux granite to cover outlet covers in my granite backsplash. Good luck with your project.
First off, check the panel covers on the dishwasher to make sure you don't have a stainless steel cover included. If you don't, head to your home store and you should be able to find what you're looking for in the spray paint aisle. Your end result will look much better if you do not try to paint the control panel, buttons and lock.
They sell "appliance skins" or magnetic panels. Need some sites?
I saw them on Amazon. Thank you
