Do you mean before you decorate for Christmas? Your question isn't clear. If that is what you mean, the answer is no, of course not. Not unless you have TONS of Christmas decorations! Most of us just replace key items: Start at the front door, and put something Christmas-y in the foyer to welcome guests. If you have something above the fireplace, you might replace it with a large wreath or sled decorated with greenery and ornaments. Clear the coffee table of what is usually there and put out a grouping of Christmas candles and figurines, etc. Change out artwork for a collection of Christmas cards arranged on a "tree" of fat green yarn shaped on the wall with little clear Command hooks. Replace your dining room table centerpiece with a pretty bowl of ornaments on a bed of short pine boughs. Add a Christmas-y pillow to the sofa or a chair (it could just be a plaid one) and do the same to the guest room. It's really about exchanging and adding, more than clearing out. Just be mindful of the colors that already exist in the room. There's nothing worse than a blue and yellow room with a lot of red and green thrown around it! Try to work with the colors that are there. Christmas things come in all colors.
I put some things away to make room for my Christmas decorations. I move an end table out so that there is a spot for the Christmas tree.
I only clear a room if I am doing a complete redo, including paint. Normally I tackle one area at a time because if I don't get everything done it still looks nice. This is a personal choice.
