How do I stencil flowers on a hope chest?
I’ve learned I need to use gesso. Question: Are these the right steps? gesso, an acrylic top coat and then the flowers? Or does the background color have to be painted on separately just like the flowers? Thanks.

Paint the background color first? Depends on what you want the background color to be.
Gesso is pretty much what the Old Masters used, and they experimented a lot, also. It gives a canvas enough stability that the picture stays in place and does not stretch or shrink. They could also paint over old canvases by covering them with gesso. In your case, it would keep the wood grain from showing. Once covered and dried, you have to provide the background. Big tip: you can add colored paint to your gesso if you want to have color on a specific area of your hope chest, like the lid and rim. Just use painter’s tape to block off the wood from the painting. Best wishes, ☺️
Thanks so much. I guess i’m Asking whether you can use acrylic paint on top of acrylic paint
I thought the gesso would be too clear to serve as the background painted layer
I’m not going to have any wood showing.
You can tell this gesso stuff is totally new to me.
Hi Cynthia! I love your idea and here are several ways to achieve that goal. I love stencils and have used them on light paneling, walls and furniture. Also check out these links. I wish you the best, and I also wish you a wonderful holiday season.
