You do want to use an extension cord that is rated for exterior use. We thread our extension cords through PVC piping so the rabbits don't eat the cords.
Agree! You need to use exterior extension cords.
You definitely require a cord that is made for outside use as to be protected from the elements. You do not have to bury it in the ground but you do need to be conscious of where you are placing so that it does not become a tripping hazard or small children can play with it. The label on a cord, when buying, usually tells you whether or not it can be used outside.
Yes if you go to the hardware store like Home Depot they will have outdoor extension cords in different sizes.
Your big box hardware store will have outdoor rated extension cords near their holiday decorations that are designed specifically for seasonal decor (and frequently are green to be less visible in grassy yards).
My two favorite styles...the type that has plugins spaced out along the length of the cord so your yard decor can be spread out...the other type has a multi plug at the end so several items can be plugged in using one cord.
Early in the season you'll have better options but I'm sure you'll still find something safe.
Happy decorating.
