How come my cabinet turned yellow when I painted over the chalk paint?
I repainted my jewelry armoire with white Rustoleum Chalk Paint. When I painted the matte sealer (also from Rustoleum) it left yellow streaks all over it.
Hi Lori. It is best to lightly sand the cabinets first. I would also remove any hardware. That will make it easier. Then using a smaller roller prime them. After that has dried paint. Good Luck!
Have to determine first if the cabinets was painted with latex paint or oil base. Easy way to tell is with sandpaper. When sanding if it produces a small amount of dust than it is painted with latex. If it balls up on the sandpaper then it was painted with oil base. You can use any paint over latex to refinish however you can only use oil base over oil-based painted cabinets. Latex paint will never stick properly especially long-term over oilbase. If they were painted with oil base in the beginning, you will have to use paint thinner to clean any oily residue from the cabinets either from handprints or cooking. With latex painted cabinets, you will need to sand the finish to make smooth again and help cut away any oily residue or use paint thinner to wash down the cabinets first.
Remove doors and hardware if applicable. Lightly sand any imperfections and sheen from surfaces. Clean with a degreaser or equivalent. We used a primer Zinsser http://www.lowes.com/pd_192480-3501-90_4294937087?productId=3609490 to cover the wood the painted. Just a note I had some sticking issues with multiple layers allow to dry completely between coats. Also on my second set of cabinets we purchased a Wagoner power sprayer. Much better finish easier coating using less paint. Replace doors after painting.
Litzy sand them down so paint will stick
Hi Lorie! I can tell you how to paint your wood cabinets with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint! :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: If the surface is slippery, apply two coats of Slick Stick. If you are concerned with bleed through from the wood, apply two coats of BOSS instead
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step four: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent finish
I am attaching some cabinets that have been painted with Dixie Belle Paint so you can see the outcome.
