Hi Jim. I'm Cindy. Begin by removing the top two-thirds of the pine cones. A hand held saw is probably the best tool for this job. But, even with that, it may be difficult to cut them. You only need the bottom third of the pine cone. Next step is painting them. Bright colors look really nice. Once the paint it dry, you should paint the centers with craft paint. Yellow centers look best with a tiny red dot in the center. These zinnia pine cones are beautiful in a bowl or on a wreath. And they look like the real thing.
