We have done two bathroom renovations.
We replaced our fiberglass walls with a very economical white tile and reused the fiberglass base and glass doors. We feel the tile is an upgrade from the fiberglass walls for a basement guest room shower.
Looking back we wished we used a more fancy or expensive tile, but this was a weekend home when we did the renovation and it was a functional repair of a guest use -basement shower base vs a stylish more costly reno.
If your budget allows -the cultured marble inserts are far easier to maintain if a shower’s going to get a lot of use— that might be my first choice over tile for appearance and cleaning ease.
The benefit of tile overwhelming various patterns and color choices you have to choose from versus the cultured marble.
Also we also remodeled a guest hall tub removing the entire fiberglass unit replaced the tub and used a white subway tile with an upgrade sparkly white glittered grout. We dont miss the fiberglass.
There are larger wall tiles available to make a small shower appear larger. Larger tules mean fewer grout lines. Avoid true marble, because it will water spot.
Tile with a great number of "waves" or ridges may be harder to wipe dry.
Placing tiles vertically will draw the eye upward, while placing them horizontally will make the space appear wider.
Treating tiles with car wax will facilitate cleaning.
Fiberglass inserts avoid grout lines and grout maintenance, are easier to dry and faster to install.
