if you do remove them, you are correct you’ll have to replace/ repair the wall behind them. You could paint them with a glazing kit. I’m pretty sure Rust-Oleum sells a product you can use.

Or you can buy removeable coated wallpaper in many designs. There are hundreds of designs on Amazon and other sites. This way after a few years you can change the design again.

i chose not to remove the cheap tiles around my fireplace at the suggestion of a tiler. He said to put the same size tiles right over top of the old. It worked & I am very happy with the results.
I don’t see why it would not work for you if you choose to go that route..
