I would buy a textured paint (Lowes has the best selection) and paint over the paneling. It will look like stucco when you finish!
OrangeGlo is a nice wood cleaner that will add a sheen to it.
Add some decor that doesn’t use wood like metal or glass to reflect light.
I love painted paneling. To avoid it not looking beautifully finished You need to caulk all the cracks from joints and fill the holes from nails. Here is a post I wrote showing some of these details.
