How do I rebuild an entry porch?
We had the concrete slab of the front porch drop and needed to put concrete blocks in front. Would be very interested to see some ideas to make a new entry porch. We have been thinking a railing might be added but maybe some wood structures might be added. Would very appreciate ideas. Thanks, Doug

Short of removing and replacing the concrete how about a wood deck.
I would definitely enlarge it and agree adding a wooden deck-like porch. yes you could vote over the slab. Then add maybe two round pillars with a roof above. Then a ornamental evergreen on each side.
Yes a wooden deck over the concrete. Make is a small or large as you choose. A roof over it like Susan suggests or a pergola.

Doug,
You have three odd step heights. You need to get from the side walk into the door in a comfortable and natural way. There is a formula for steps involving the rise over the run. The rise plus the run should equal approximately 17.5 inches. Your stairs should be about 7 inches or so high and treads 10 inches or so deep. You can adjust the formula to have lower rises with deeper runs, but step heights over 7 inches start to become uncomfortable. If you just build something on top of the existing step, it will make the step up even higher. And, if you live in a place where it snows, melting snow piled on the step can leak back under your door or eventually cause the wood under the door to rot. Most building codes require the top step/landing to be 6-8 inches below the door. Make sure you measure carefully and create steps that will be easy to navigate. You might be better off getting rid of what you have and starting over. It looks like you should only have two steps up, not three, unless you are going to make the runs longer. Wood steps are fairly easy to build. It would match your architecture and you could incorporate a railing.
I agree with Seth. I would enlarge the porch with a deck over the cement step.
You may want to add a cover over it as well. I'm sure it would add a great deal to your curb appeal and even give you room to sit outside in the evening.
