How can you smooth out tiled countertops without replacing them?

Look up DIY cement counter tops. I, myself, would remove the tile as I have no idea when or if whatever is holding the tiles in place will loosen and make the new surface crack. Removing tile is not hard - just messy and time consuming. Most tile can be removed with a hammer and wide flat screwdriver.
