What is the fabric content of your current curtains? Synthetics do not absorb dye well and can turn out blotchy.
If you don't have a self leveling washing machine, you can dye in hot water in the washing machine.
If not, then you can use a very large boiler on the stove.
My best results have been with Rit brand.
Just buy Rit brand dye and follow the instructions on the box.
Naomie is right that success in dying largely depends on the fabric content.
