i have actually used bleach on difficult stains. the bleach pens allow me to be VERY specific where i put it. only on the stain and don't leave it very long! i actually just sit there and watch for a lightening, or only walk away with a timer for 5-10 min. then test a spot with wet rag and see if stain is lifting. (if you try this on a colored rug, say pale blue, for instance, do not leave on ... just spot, and dab). add a bit more time as needed. sometimes 20 min is needed. if it's a light rug and you are specific with the bleach on the stain you should be fine. i did this on my beige stairs and got a bit lighter spot than the carpet, but that was waaaaay better than the red stain that was there ;)
I would try vinegar, scrub it, then apply hydrogen peroxide if any rust left and even sprinkle baking soda and let it set. I believe the vinegar will work but if not try the other two items. Happy cleaning.
