How can I remove the fringe from a rug so that it doesn't fray?

I would like to remove the fringe on my fringed rugs. They are hard to vacuum. The fringe keeps getting caught in the vacuum.

  • Trim it short with scissors. If it is knotted, you can simply cut it about 1/3 to 1/2 inch from the knot.

    Cut them off.

I have always just given the fringe a haircut or trim with a pair of very sharp scissors.

    Hi Vicki,

First examine your carpet to see if the fringe is actually part of the weave of the carpet or if it was added after the carpet was made. Does it have knots close to the carpet itself? If it does, you can undo or even carefully cut those knots and the fringe should come off without a problem. However if the fringe is part of the actual weave of the carpet, you'll have to finish off the ends. You can do that if you have a sewing machine that will allow you to sew across the ends, thus stopping the carpet from unraveling. You could also use iron-on binding if you can find one that is wide enough to fold from the front to the back of the carpet. I don't think that this will stick as well as one that is sewn though. As a last resort, I think you could run a line of hot glue on the back of the carpet, right along the edge. I'd do that before cutting off the fringe. I'd make sure that line of hot glue was double wide for extra protection. It's possible that it might come through to the front side, but it shouldn't be very noticeable. I'd also suggest doing it on a hard glass/plastic/ceramic tile surface so that if the hot glue sticks to your surface when you're doing it, you'll be able to easily scrape it off. I hope one of these ideas will help you. Wishing you the best.

    Hello Vicki,

I understand this issue, I folded the fringe back on my Karastan wool rugs to the reverse side and used wide tape to occlusively completely tape it in place to the backside. Im very happy with the look and ease of vacuuming.

    I hope this helps.

Fringe is not meant to have a vacuum run over it. It should be cleaned only using the soft brush attachment of your sweeper.
