Be sure to use button hole weight thread, as it is much stronger and thicker than regular sewing thread. Not only will it withstand the tugging required to pull the needle through the thick coat fabric, it will hold up without shredding or breaking to buttoning and unbuttoning for a much longer time without having the need to be replaced.
To reinforce the coat button, sew on a clear flat button, referred to as a stay button, to the underside.
