How do I paint a faux rug on our balcony floor?

I've wanted to do this since we bought our condo 14 years ago. The deck surface has a pebbly texture and is painted a battleship gray. I'd like to paint a faux area rug. Two issues of primary concern to me: 1 keeping lines and edges clean and neat on the textured surface and 2. Making the design durable and weather resistant.

Hi Dean. Great idea. 2. Use porch and patio paint for your rug. 1. I've found the easiest way to paint a straight line on a lumpy bumpy surface, since tape does not work, is to use a straight edge spackle knife as a guide, held vertically in place to keep the brush bristles from spreading out. You'll need to go back and forth as you go along to fill the valleys. Wipe the knife each time you move to the next spot. If you have a steady hand, you can wiggle the brush up to the outline of your rug, with the same results. Don't forget to paint a darker gray around 2 or 3 of the edges for a faux shadow!😊

Love the shadow reminder I'd never have thought of that. But, its the kind of detail that completes the look. I'd conisidered using a stencil with a dabbing technique but the irregularity of the surface caused me to back away from the idea.

Be sure and clean the deck well, first. You’ll want your hard work to not peel.
