Hi Ruth. I did a bit of reading so that I could answer your question properly. I learned that you should put one quart of good old-fashioned white vinegar in the toilet tank. Allow it to set overnight. Do some scrubbing with a hard bristle brush. The scrubbing should be easy as the vinegar breaks down all minerals, rust, and streaks. Then flush.
According to Bob Villa's website (link below), "You’ll need enough vinegar to fill the tank up to the overflow valve, which could mean as many as three gallons depending on the size of your tank." https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-toilet-tank/ I hope that helps!
The vinegar in the toilet tank cleans the tank only not the holes. Water flows through the holes when the toilet is flushed.

I'd pour in a full quart size bottle - don't worry, the smell goes away quickly. You can buy industrial strength white vinegar at the grocery store. Works great!
