Hi Barbara. I would lightly sand it. Then either stain it, paint it, or just clear coat it. If you decided to leave it as is or stain it put a few coats of polyurethane on to help better protect it. Good Luck!

I Would add some paint to it! Honestly a quick spray paint would be the fastest option. Valspar makes a chalk paint spray paint you can spray on it!

My dad a plant stand outside for several years. He gave it to me a few months ago. I sanded and sanded some more. Then applied several VERY light coats of spray paint. Actually 5 coats total. Then 2 coats of poly. Took a total of 4 days but the result was so beautiful I put in the front room. If you don't want to paint it you could always just spray with poly after sanding but that somewhat depends on the condition of the wood.

Thanks. Will your procedure protect it outside? That is where I will use it. Also will this work if the wood is split a little?

You will find out how bad the splits are when you sand it. The planter my dad gave me was split also but I found when I start sanding that is was only superficial and sanded right off. If you are going to keep is outside I would apply at least 3 coats of poly but apply lightly so they don't run.

It's adorable! And looks in pretty good shape. You can leave it el naturale and just give it a few coats of polyurethane or stain it then polyurethane it! I think painting it might take away it's charm. Have fun:)
