How do I prepare paneling to paint for a smooth wall?
Hi, I live in great older mobile home with darker paneling from one end to the other, I would like to paint the paneling, updating the home and brightening each room as I go. I want the wall to be smooth and not have the grooves every few inches, and I don't want to use wallpaper. What do I use to eliminate the grooves before I paint

You could use bondo to fill in the grooves. It would be a lot of work, but it would get the job done. Here is a tutorial on how to use bondo to repair furniture... the process would be the same. https://www.arayofsunlight.com/2016/12/weathered-wood-with-paint-and-stain-html.html
You could fill the grooves using joint compound, just like you'd fill in cracks and seams in drywall. However, you might want to reconsider and just paint over the paneling with the grooves left as is, creating some interest in the wall. I love the look of painted paneling. Good luck.
There have been some really cool pictures shared of paneling painted with white paint with the grooves left in and it looks sort of like a farmhouse shiplap finish. If you don't want the grooves, you could fill them in with joint compound.
We painted over paneling without filling in the grooves. It came out very nice. The grooves add character and interest.
First scrub the walls with Murphy oil soap, allow to dry, the go over wall with sand paper then paint.

I'm covering wood paneling in my home as well. I have been filling with joint compound and using a 3" putty knife to make sure it is smooth. I tried smoothing with an old gift card first, but I could still see the grooves. I'm happy with my current results. Good luck with yours.
