Having been through a fire, I was advised to send them to a dry cleaner since that is the best way to remove not only the soot, but the smell. If your clothing is smoky due to a fire, you should be able to get the dry cleaning covered by your home owners policy.
HI Dionne,
Are you talking about cigatette smoke or something as bad a a housefire?
This link talks about different kinds of smoke vs soot, informative and hope it helps:

This is for cigarette smoke:

Hi Dionne, if you can wash it, To get cigarette smell out of clothes, soak yourclothes for 1 hour in warm water with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda, then wash them as usual. You can also put your smoky clothes in a sealable plastic bag with 1 tablespoon of baking soda or 1-2 dryer sheets per item of clothing
If it is dry clean only, try this Place dryer sheets, coffee grounds, or charcoal inside a nylon stocking or wrap them up in cheesecloth. Put this inside the item and leave for several days. For bags, you can also use an opened box of baking soda in the same way. Just like with other fabrics, fresh air and sunlight will go a long way to reducing odors.
My husband is a musician and mostly there is no smoking allowed in various places, but last night it was at a privately owned club....the smell of cigarette smoke was awful on his clothes ....I placed them on the patio outside, it really got the odor out...the cool weather really helps
OdoBan is absolutely fabulous! We use it to get rid of all kinds of odors. It does it quickly and is safe.
Neighbors recently had a house fire. To get the smoke smell out, of clothes, I used detergent, Oxyclean, Rock salt and Mr Clean with summer citrus. Had previously used something with orange, but couldn’t find it. Used cold water and double rinse. Worked fine.
Thank you😊
