This video is about cabinets... but the principle would work the same on your hutch. I did my armoire this way... and then sanded it for a "shabby chic" look. (see photo)

Chalk paint is easy to paint with, there is no ryme or reason in your strokes. Just remeber to use some kind of wax in the areas that any lliquid gets on, I myself dont always sand after I use a wash cloth and rib the distress areas you want.
I have an old dark stained pine nanny's cupboard and we used Annie Sloan chalk paint on it and it turned out beautiful - I never thought it would cover the imperfections of the pine, the dark stain and the outdated look but it did.
