Can a water based varnish be used on chalk paint?

Question

Is it possible to use a water based clear varnish instead of the finishing wax on chalk painted furniture? I love the look of distressed chalk paint but I'd like a satin or even glossy finish on some items.

yes, really any type is fine, polycrylic would be least likely to change the shade. an oil based would change it slightly.

Yes either polycrylic(water based) or polyurethane(oil). I would use polyurethane over darker colours as it will amber the chalkpaint colour.

yes it is quite possible, in fact if the pc is painted a light color. this works best, an oil base would yellow your pc... good luck..

Yes. Use it on the tops of everything.  I think it seals better.  I use a water base polyurethane.  Oil base will yellow as soon as sun light hits it.  And water base dries quickly and nicely.

Hi Maryann, yes you can. They're both water-based so there shouldn't be any peeling.
